Charlie Brown Isn't the Only Good Sport

Molly is also an incredibly good sport. As pets do, she became our first child when we first moved to Arizona. In fact, we used some of our wedding money to buy her. Beagles, in general, are really good around kids and that is partly why they make such good family dogs. Still, when it was time to bring Andrew home from the hospital I did wonder how she would do. To ease the transition, the day before we brought him home I brought home a blanket from the hospital that he slept with. Molly was able to sniff it to her heart's content. When we first brought him home she was very curious and we would hold the baby and let Molly sit near us and check him out. When she seemed to be accepting him we would let her inspect him.
It didn't take long before she would lay near him whenever he was on the floor. If he was playing with toys then she would bring over something of hers too, like this teddy bear blanket.
Gradually Andrew became much more hands on with Molly, and she always gracefully tolerated it. She's had her eyes poked, ears pulled and tongue grabbed. And she wiggles and comes back to more.
Once Andrew began to eat on his own Molly thought she had died and gone to heaven. She has a permanent place right next to Andrew when he eats. We've had to cut back on the amount of food we feed her in order to compensate for this. Even so, it's sort of worth always having clean floors.
But now? Molly is a saint. Andrew is a giant pest to her now. He chases her around the house and she runs from him. He hugs her. Hard. Molly has always had her crate as a reprieve. She now goes there more and more frequently as he bothers her. It's her safe place, and she knows she won't be bothered there. Today, while fixing dinner, I couldn't get to him before he invaded her sanctuary.
You gotta love a beagle. And a boy who loves his beagle.

  5. Such a sweet girl, that Molly. It's great when all the kids play nice...or at least tolerate one another.
