What is Going On? Help Please!

First of all, Andrew has been labeled "100% Perfect" by his doctor. He had his 6 month well baby visit yesterday. His ear infection is gone. Lungs sound good. Had his vaccinations. We need to finish the antibiotics, and he still needs his once daily breathing treatment, but we were able to stop the several times a day treatment. Andy is in the 75th percentile for weight, length and head circumference.

That being said, weird things, for us, have been happening for the past several nights and B and I can't take it anymore. Here's where you come in . . . . please lend your thoughts.

Andrew has always been a really good sleeper, sleeping in his room for many months now. He has also been sleeping through the night with no feedings for two months now. And by "through the night" I mean that we put him down between 7 and 8 (and literally "put him down" 'cuz he goes right to sleep) and we don't hear from him until about 6 in the morning. Anyhow, the past several nights he whines and cries in his sleep constantly. It never wakes him up, but it does wake us up. Sometimes we give him his binky, but sometimes he already has it when we check. I'm not kidding here, the boy is asleep! We pick him up and he continues to sleep, but he continues to whine or cry too. We've even waken him up to feed him. He'll gladly eat, but that doesn't take care of the problem for long.

Any ideas? Because we sure can't take this business of getting up every few minutes from midnight until 5 am!

  1. Happened to one of my foster daughters as well. A friend in psychology told me it was part of her brain growing, neurons making new connections, and to leaver her be - it was going to be harder on me than her. It's not the same as nightmares.

I don't know why they do it, but both of my kids don't sleep quietly - I've been up every few hours a night for almost 4 years now :)

  4. I have heard it is a growing thing. It is fine and you should leave him be. BTW, you are VERY lucky to be able to get him down that early. I had that luck with Michael, and did not know how lucky I was. Willow will sleep through the night, but we are having a good night if we can get her down by 9 p.m.!

  5. I would say growing as well. Asher has gone through all kinds of vocalizations in his sleep from almost the time he was born. It comes and goes, changes in form. Sometimes I notice it around times of milestones, teething, or change in the house. 6 months is about time for a growth spurt and even developmentally he will be changing very quickly over the next few months.

  6. Since I am not a mom...yet...my first instinct is that Andrew is going through a growth spurt too.

I may have a question for you in the next few days.

  7. Yeah, it could be a growth spurt because my son has gone through a few different phases of what sounds like the same thing.

  8. LG does the same thing, off and on. Sometimes it's teething, a growth spurt, or gas. It usually only lasts a few days and then he gets back to normal. I hope Andrew gets over it quickly, I know it's wearing on you.

I think it is a phase that all babies go through. perfetly normal. I'd give it a week or so and if it doesn't stop maybe mention it to his Dr next time you go.

  10. He could be teething. Lizzie has been doing this for about a month and we just let her fuss for about 3 minutes MAX and then she goes back down. You could also put a whole bunch of pacifiers in his bed and he could find one and stick in his mouth. Lizzie sleeps with 7 pacifiers-we are creating co-dependency :)
My doc told me it could be teething or growing pains...you might try giving him some Motron before he goes to bed.
