The Most Expensive Chicken EVER!!!

I admit it . . . I'm basically pretty lazy. I will only buy boneless, skinless chicken. And I never buy a whole chicken unless it is already cooked. However, on Sunday at the grocery store I came across a deal too good to pass up. It was a 3 pound package of chicken thighs for just $1.05. For that I figured we could make do with the bones. Once I got home Brian set about removing the bones and skin and that should have been the end of the story. Except that a bone and some fleshy bits wound up on the floor and Molly ate inhaled it.

Here we are a couple of days later and she still hasn't passed anything remotely the size of a chicken thigh bone. Our vet told us yesterday that we would need to bring her in today if she still hadn't passed it by this morning. Imagine, if you will, how silly Brian must have looked this morning at the crack of dawn examining Molly's output in the back yard. Even I have to imagine because I was still tucked cozily in bed. Once I did get up it was time to call the vet to arrange an appointment.

So Molly and I showed up at the vet's office, with her in all of her excited beagle glory. She was so bouncy and happy and freely giving kisses that the vet had a hard time believing that there was anything wrong with her. The vet couldn't feel anything in her gut so she was brought back for a couple of x-rays. The x-rays showed something quite unbelievable. There is no trace of any kind of bone in her belly! Apparently she has broken it down so much there isn't much left or she already passed it in such small pieces that we didn't recognize it. 'Cuz you know, we are only doing visual inspections here!

The vet even warned me about what is to come, based upon her x-rays. So, instead of calling her Molly Pie it will be more appropriate to call her Poopy Pie. We still need to watch her for a few days for any signs of distress, but she should be just fine.

And cha-ching . . . that was a $200 vet bill.

So the bargain chicken has cost me $201.05.

I think I'm back to buying boneless, skinless chicken. Though I may follow in the footsteps of my cousin Christy and give up meat altogether, based upon what I saw on TV last night. But that's another story.

  2. I'm sorry for the fiasco, but I am SO glad the dog is ok.... Seriously, that could have been much worse.

Yeah, I had one of those exerpiences this weekend. I avoided a Toll Road in Atlanta, thinking I could find my way to my destination with an alternate route.... 30 miles later and about 60 minutes, I knew I should have paid the $1.50 toll!!!

I'm with you - we only buy bonesless, skinless too...

  4. oh my goodness! what an expensive chicken. I'm glad your dog is okay. Once my cat ate one of my antibiotic capsules. I called the poison control line for humans and they took my call! They said she'd be fine.

  5. Wow, that $1.05 chicken cost inflated quickly! I'm glad your dog is okay, though!

We only buy boneless skinless ourselves, but that is because neither one of us likes the dark meat.

  6. I'm sorry, but my favorite part of the whole story was soapchick's comment. How hilarious that she actually called the human poison control!!

I am glad that my dear niece Molly Pie (or should I say Molly Poop) is doing o.k.

  7. Hey, why isn't it letting me vote? I see everything, but the spot to cast the vote one way or the other.

  8. Dogs are amazing...they can drive you nuts with the stupid things they do, but then you're so happy they're okay. I'm glad she's doing better and won't need an operation! That could have made that bargain chicken even less of a bargain!

  9. I'm glad to hear that your Molly-Poop-Pie is doing well. She has an awesome digestive tract, yeah?
I buy chicken in almost any format and then grumble when I have to deal with bones, but sometimes the flavor is just so much better that way...

  11. I've very happy the doggie is okay, but the story (after we know all is fine) is freaking hilarious.

I have the "tale of te $350 fix from the $3 box of haircolor" story, but it hurts to much to tell it!

  13. LOVE the story! Only because I always seem to have something like that happen - try to save money and spend more.

I am so glad that your dog is okay!
