2 Steps Forward, One Step Back

While Andy has had some successes with potty training over these last few days, he still has a ways to go. I've decided that it was just way too stressful for all of us. As such, Andy is back in diapers for bedtime and we'll be using pull-ups during the day when we are out and about.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think that the 3 day plan was a failure. My sweet boy is much more aware of his need for the potty now and is able to use it once he is on it. That alone is a huge step! He, and we, struggle with getting him there in time. My boy plays soooo intently that he just can't be bothered most of the time.

So, for now, I'll let him decide when he wants to wear underpants and when he wants to wear pull-ups. Night time isn't really negotiable right now. I mean, he was able to stay dry for 5 to 8 hours, but not really too consistently. When he would wake up wet he'd be really upset and then be awake, and keep me awake, for an hour and a half. That just isn't going to work.

To make matters worse, Andy has been battling a cold with a really nasty cough for days. Today he even blessed us with the runs, so pull-ups were a really good call. For the first time in his life he has a really nasty diaper rash, or at least that's what we think.

All in all though, I really can't complain. My sweet boy and I had some great days of hanging out and bonding at home. We had lots of time to play, chat, read and cuddle, and that alone makes it all worth while.

  1. good job. Potty training is that, training and its never done in one shot. try again in a few months.

  2. For his diaper rash, try finding something called Resinol. It's really hard to find, but it is a wonder drug. As for a close second, you should be able to get something called Calmoseptine behind the counter at most pharmacies. It will cure his diaper rash in 24-48 hrs!

  3. I think you are smart to put him in diapers at night. Good rest is so important. My doctor told me that there is no point in trying nighttime potty training because at some point the brain just tells the body not to pee at night and until that happens, there isn't any point in trying to change the body's natural instinct to eliminate waste. It's different when you are awake and aware of the urges. Good luck!

  4. After reading - this is the same approach we have taken. I am on attempt #3 to explain, demonstrate the potty.

I am glad you enjoyed your time home
