Yesterday was a great day for Andrew! He was able to be weaned off his oxygen in the afternoon and stabilize himself. His breathing is no longer an issue and I don't think anybody is concerned about it at all. Late yesterday afternoon he had some formula and burped like a champ. He seemed to tolerate it well, but after about 3 hours his tummy was distended so his next feeding was skipped. (He is still getting nutrients through an IV in his head, so that's OK.) A while after that he was spitting up/throwing up so his next feeding was skipped too. However, this morning he was fed at about 4:45 because he was having a fit and wanted to eat. So far, so good. We will try again at 8:00. Feeding is his next hurdle. Once he can prove himself he should be ready to head home. Everyone is thrilled with the progress he is making.
Oh, I forgot the most exciting part! Yesterday once he was stabilized after being off the oxygen and having a bunch of tubes and tape removed we were able to hold him. We had the birth parents go into the nursery first to spend some time with Andrew. Afterwards, B and I got to have our turns holding him. It was the most wonderful feeling in the world, though it still feels a little unbelievable that he is actually going home with us.
Late last night the birth mom and I went in and just sat with him and talked with him for a long time. She is so incredibly happy that they have chosen open adoption. Her peace of mind with this decision is wonderful to see. She believes that Andrew was created to be with us. Apparently one of the nurses asked her why they were placing Andrew for adoption and she answered that this is just how it was meant to be. And I get it. I totally get it. We feel the exact same way.
So, without further delay, here he is! The picture is a little dark, since the nursery is very dim, but I didn't want to piss him off with the flash while he was sleeping so nicely. Don't you just love those cheeks and those sweet little lips?!??!?!
He's beautiful.
